A-Roll & B-Roll

The main action of your scene is called the A-Roll. After you've shot the main scene, shoot details, close-ups, and other shots that could be used as cut-aways or B-Roll. These shots can be cut into the A-Roll to make it more interesting or make it flow better. Often, the editor just needs a quick shot of something to make a transition or to smooth over the change between two angles that don't cut together well. If you provide an assortment of cut-away or cut-in shots, such as close-ups, shots of the environment , or interesting detail shots, the editor will have more options.

Padding

Leave padding at the beginning and end of every shot. Start recording, wait, then call for "action" in the shot. Once a shot has ended, everyone not in the shot should wait for a moment before calling "cut," so the editor has room to work with the scene. This is nothing more than a few seconds at the beginning and the end of every shot.

Quiet on the set

Any noise on set when filming can make your footage useless. Always ask for "quiet on the set" to make sure the work doesn't have to be done more times than necessary. Everyone wants to be a part of the fun, but they just can't. Make sure to shut the mouths of the on lookers and hang arounds. It's not only your duty, it's part of your role in this class.
